Designing Diplomatic Residences: Balancing Protocol and Comfort

Diplomatic residences sit at the intersection of private home and public institution. They must project national identity, meet rigorous security requirements, and still function as a comfortable family home.

The Challenge of Dual Function

A diplomatic residence hosts formal state dinners one evening and a family breakfast the next morning. The design must accommodate both seamlessly — formal reception rooms that flow into private living quarters, public spaces that can be secured independently.

Security Without Ostentation

Security features must be integrated invisibly. Reinforced entry points, surveillance infrastructure, safe rooms, and access control systems should not compromise the aesthetic dignity of the residence.

Representing National Identity

Many diplomatic missions use their residences as soft-power tools — incorporating art, textiles, and material culture from their home country into the design. JSS has worked with several missions to achieve this balance thoughtfully.

JSS Approach

Our work on diplomatic residences has taught us the importance of listening carefully to protocol requirements while maintaining a strong design sensibility. Every element is specified with both function and impression in mind.
